1. Choose the Simple uploader.
Here's how.
The first time you click the add photos button? and select a gallery, you'll see this:

If you don't see it, no worries. We took you straight to the uploader you used last time. At the bottom of the page you'll see a link to choose another uploader. Click it to see the choice for the Simple uploader.
Now choose the Simple uploader. You'll be asked to click
trust. Here's a picture of what the trust button looks like:

We hate telling you this, but if you didn't click trust when asked, you have to quit
your web browser , re-start it and select the Simple uploader again.
2. Did it install correctly?
How to tell.
On the right is the way it should look if installed correctly:
If it's missing, 99% of the time it's because the trust button wasn't clicked as the Simple uploader was installing.
We hate telling you this, but you'll have to quit your web browser , re-start it, and re-select the Simple uploader.
If that doesn't do the trick, it's very likely that fetching the latest free version of Java will. You can get it from Sun.
3. Did it stall as if it jammed? Let's unjam it.
Simple things first:
- Does your computer fall asleep during uploads? Here's how to keep it awake on Windows XP.
- Closing other programs can make a big difference on older PCs.
- Re-starting your computer (argh...sorry to ask that) solves 50% of uploading problems.
- If you're at home, re-setting your router, if you have one, and your Cable or DSL modem can work wonders. Here's how.
- Do you have a wireless connection, such as on a laptop? If so, taking it closer to your wireless base station can help. Even better, try plugging directly into the Cable or DSL modem if you can.
- If you're at work, is it possible that your company won't allow you to upload photos?
- Not fixed yet? Let's test your connection to us. This is actually a fun test, and one to keep your Internet Service Provider honest. Here's how.
- If that test turned out poorly, is it because you have a satellite Internet connection? They have good downloads (to you) but very poor uploads (to us)...
- If the speed test indicated poor upload speeds, and you or your Internet Service Provider believes the connection from you to the Internet is fine, there are tests to narrow where along the Internet it's failing. The first is a general traceroute, which you can do from PCs or Macs. Once that's finished, go here. This will automagically run a traceroute from us to you. You will also recieve an email with the results that you can forward to us. The final test is a line quality test.
- Is your head spinning from all those tests? Have no fear! SmugMug's Support Heroes to the rescue! Send us the results and we should be able to pinpoint the problem.
4. Did it appear to add photos but didn't? Find out why.
The most likely reason for photos to arrive at SmugMug but not display in your galleries is that they weren't in a format we know how to accept.
We keep an upload log for you that you can find in in your Control Panel. Click view log in the Stats tab.
Or, you can login at the top of the page and we'll provide a link to your upload log here.
We have seen cases where uploads were routed through a proxy server. The proxy server was accepting photos but not passing them along. If there are no entries in your upload log and the uploader thinks it's uploading, this is likely the issue. That sounds like a job for your IT department... We're sorry to not have a better answer for this problem.
